American Graces: Diversity, Equality, Unity

18" H X 16" W X 8" D

American Graces: Diversity, Equality, Unity are soft sculpture art dolls. Their faces are sculpted with needle and thread, and colored with pastels and prisma pencils. They are dressed in hand dyed silk and wool. I used a technique known as nuno felting to make their seamless dresses combining hand dyed silk gauze, habotai and tussah, and mohair wool with a resist.  The wooden base is painted to mimic marble. The American Graces are inspired by the Three Graces of Greek mythology. Here, the colors of their clothing, their skin, and the values they stand for are all American.

The piece depicts three young women of different races. America is often described as a "melting pot" for the many different races, religions, and cultural backgrounds that make up our population, contributing to the uniqueness and strength of our country. These dolls explore and celebrate American diversity, equality and unity.
